Sand Hills State Forest campsite information

Sand Hills State Forest offers 20 primitive campsites available for reservations.

The Sugarloaf Mountain Recreation Area has eight campsites located along Mountain Road. Six of these sites have accompanying shelters.

There are eight campsites for equine use located off of Gas Line Road. Five of these sites have corrals.

Four additional campsites are available, one with an accompanying shelter at Campbell’s Lake and three other single campsites without shelters at Hunter Pond, Lee Pond and Sexton Pond.

Most campsites have a picnic table, fire ring or fireplace and trash can. There are three restroom facilities: one near Mountain Pond, one at Sugarloaf Mountain and one at the equine camping area.

You will need a permit for horseback riding at Sand Hills State Forest. Permits are not required for hikers using the trails or for others using the day-use areas, shelters or ponds; however, reservations are required to use the shelters and can be made by calling the forest office directly at (843) 498-6478.

Recreational permits for horseback riding can be purchased online through sc.gov or at the Sand Hills State Forest office during regular business hours.

Equine camping area on Gasoline Road

There is a large day-use parking area for horse trailer parking on Gas Line Road. Overnight camping for horse groups is available at eight equine sites in the equine camping area off of Gas Line Road.

Each equine site with a corral (sites 8, 9, 13, 14 and 15) can hold 6-10 trailers per site.

Sites 10-12 can hold 2-3 trailers per site and do not have a corral. All equine campsites do not have shelters.

Rules

  • Campers must obtain a reservation from the Sand Hills State Forest office.
  • Campers must camp in the reserved site.
  • Lanterns must not be hung in trees or bushes.
  • The person obtaining a reservation is responsible for everything that happens in the reserved site.
  • Reservations run from 11 a.m. on day one until 11 a.m. the following day.
  • Pack out what you pack in.

  • Swimming in ponds or creeks
  • Drugs or alcoholic beverages
  • Picking or cutting plants
  • Firearms (while riding or hiking)
  • Fireworks
  • Pets (unless on a leash)
